MAY MIX // MHZ

MESH has been super keen to feature mHz for awhile now so we're thrilled to present him as this month’s guest! We first saw him perform at the Aotearoa Audio Arts Festival in 2018, which he co-founded and curated, and have been big fans ever since.

Mo H. Zareei aka mHz is an Iranian electronic musician, sound artist, and researcher, based in Wellington. Using custom-built software and hardware, his experiments with sound cover a wide range from electronic compositions to kinetic sound-sculptures and audiovisual installations.

Regardless of the medium, his work aims to highlight the beauty in the basics of sound and light production and reductionist audiovisual elements that draw inspiration from physical and architectural principles. Over the course of his PhD, he developed a portfolio of works focused on the intersections of sound art and Brutalism and his Brutalist Noise Ensemble has been featured on platforms such as Creative Applications, Streaming Museum, and Fast Co.

Mo has presented his work at international venues and festivals including SETxCTM Festival (Tehran) (which you can read a great in-depth review of here), New Zealand Festival (Wellington), the International Symposium on Electronic Art (Vancouver) and New Interfaces for Musical Expression (London). Following his excellent debut Form (Kasuga Records, 2019), we can’t wait to hear his next album Function, which is due for release on Important Records later this year.

The mix heavily features tracks from fellow Iranian sound artists, as well as a few from friends in Aotearoa. With its fluctuations in mood and inwards trajectory, it is the perfect thing to unplug and zone out to during this uncertain time.

Wherever you are, we hope that you are safe and well 💗
