JULY MIX // E-KARE

JULY MIX // E-KARE

We are stoked to host chiptune party noise duo & music and art collective E-Kare (Piupiu Turei and Jos Van Beek) as our latest guests for the monthly mix series!

Piupiu and Jos relocated to Ōtepoti in 2019, after nearly two years living in Rotterdam. While living there, they collaborated with alternative multidisciplinary arts platform WORM Rotterdam and performed music at venues including Attent and Pink Pank, as well as experimental theatre at Rotterdam De Schouwberg. Since returning, they have shaken up the city with their high-energy live and DJ sets featuring chiptune, gabber and hardcore.

As a collective E-Kare have done everything from releasing music, to facilitating events and making zines. This month they are hosting a residency based on Instagram between the 13th and 20th of July to celebrate Puaka Matariki. The residency is called Kaumingomingo and encourages participants to embrace chaos and let go of order and control. For anyone keen to be involved, you have until the 3rd of July to register an expression of interest!

Other recent projects include APOAPO, a mini festival of experimental Māori and Pasifika art held in Ōtepoti earlier this year, and Healing Waters, a game loosely based on the zine aspect of their publication Two Sides of the Same Coin. Two Sides of the Same Coin was made during a residency with the Arts Village Rotorua as part of the Open Studio residency program in 2018/2019.

This mix is a recording of a radio DJ set featuring all original material, which was live-streamed from their lounge on 28 June. Check it out to hear all original material, interspersed with cute chat and some future announcements, including an upcoming dream collab with ENT  💜
