DECEMBER MIX // SAMARA ALOFA

DECEMBER MIX // SAMARA ALOFA

To close out the year we have a special mix from the one and only AFI GALO A.K.A Tāmaki-based multi-disciplinary artist Samara Alofa.

Samara releases tension and anoints wounds of collective pain and trauma through enchanting soundscapes and stories of the past, future and present. This can be experienced live or via their anticipated debut album Earth Punk, released last month on Kuini Qontrol. Kuini Qontrol is an online project exploring writing, art and sound as political weapons of choice in the South Pacific and is edited by Jessicoco Hansell (A.K.A Coco Solid).

Speaking to Kuini Qontrol, Samara says “lots of the themes of this album draw from the narrative of decolonising the self, returning and relearning, dismantling and unlearning, remembering how to connect and communicate with the unseen realms, the self and the ancestor guides.” Dnt care, the first single from the album, is about the cutting off of patriarchal heteronormativity and those who enable it. It is dedicated to the Tongan goddess Hikule'o, who was banished, hung and tied to Pulotu (the underworld) by their own brothers. Not only did Samara perform all of the vocals and instruments on the album, but they also produced, mixed and mastered it themself.

Samara is also one of the founding mothers of avant-nesian performance group Blood Mothers (together with Pipiana Hemi A.K.A Native Bush). This month, Samara will be coming down to Pōneke to play at the three-day Pique Plastique Festival at Pyramid Club. They will perform an improvised set with musician, taonga pūoro practitioner and music therapist, Ruby Solly on the 10th, while Blood Mothers will perform on the 11th. You can also catch a Native Bush DJ set on the 12th.

To get you hyped, Samara has provided a mix as AFI GALO, featuring all unreleased archived material. Check it out below!
