AUGUST MIX // HALF QUEEN
This month we are thrilled to feature Tāmaki-based DJ, creatrix and filmmaker Half Queen (Shaquille Wasasala).
Half Queen mixes are often peppered with dancehall, baile funk, hip hop and pop edits, weaving together sounds and genres that speak to a local and global sense of diaspora. She has played support for international touring artists including Shyboi, Umfang, Venus X and Brooke Candy.
In addition to her playful solo sets, she is known for her work supporting friend and hip hop artist JessB behind the decks. The pair also co-run FILTH, a QTBIPOC prioritised club night that has featured previous MESH guests Alexa Casino and Native Bush. Established in late 2018, FILTH nights aim to decolonise the dance floor and place an emphasis on providing a fun, safer space to let loose without being judged or gawked at.
Shaquille co-hosts H2HO, a saturday night radio show with fellow Tāmaki DJ Zeki on 95bFM (previously on KFM). She is also one half of Connie Cash, the pseudonym for her directing duo with Paloma Schneideman (aka PollyHill) and rumour has it they have something new in the works..
Opening with words from political activist and academic Angela Davis, the mix quickly kicks it up and steamrolls through high-energy cuts to get you sweating 💦
